Program
The Capitol Theatre by Art Pierce and
Dan Althouse
Art
Pierce, Executive Director, presented a slide show of the history of the
Capitol and talked about the theaters in Rome before the Capitol. He stated
Joe, Mike and Sid Kallet from Oneida built the Capitol in 1927. The Capitol
opened on Dec 10, 1928 and at the time of the opening most films had soundtrack
dialog. The first movie shown was Lilac Time with Gary Cooper.
An organ was installed but wasn’t used very much due to sound being
put into movies. They had shown a dozen movies in 1929 where the organ was used
but after that it wasn’t till 2002 that it was used again.
In 1939 the Kallets decided to renovate the Capitol, but during the
renovation it was never closed. A concession stand wasn’t put in until 1939.
The original ticket booth has been restored thanks to our own Fred Normand and
will be returning shortly.
Dan Althouse, Board Member and representing the Restoration Committee, spoke
about the multi-year project to renovate the venue for world class entertainment.
We have already seen Sesame Street, and of course coming soon is The Glen
Miller Orchestra. There has been a restoration committee formed with a
mission statement and goals and they have also consulted with other venues in
regards to their campaign strategy.
The first project is the Marquee , then a facilities upgrade, storefront,
orchestra pit and moveable organ console.
If anyone is interested contact the Capitol Administrative Offices
315-337-6277 located at 220 W Dominick Street or at romecapitol@aol.com.
Please continue to support this Rome treasure – thank you Art and Dan!
