Rotary Stuff

In 1985, Rotary launched PolioPlus, an ambitious program to immunize the world’s children against polio. Rotary’s grassroots leadership, volunteer support and initial funding for vaccines provided the catalyst for the World Health Assembly’s resolution in 1988 to eradicate polio worldwide. Spearheading partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative are the World Health Organization, Rotary International, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and UNICEF. As a result of these efforts, polio cases have dropped by 99% since 1988 and the world stands on the threshold of eradicating the disease. Rotary members have given more than half a billion U.S. dollars and countless hands-on volunteer hours toward this critical effort.

An announcement from Jackie Corbett about an upcoming party:

Rotarians, mark your calendar for the Rome Rotary Mardi Gras Party Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Elks Lodge.  A signup sheet will follow shortly.  Cost:  $5 per person.  The club will be providing meat, pasta and roast potatoes along with beer, wine and soda.  Members attending are asked to bring a dish (salad, dessert, appetizer, or side dish) or paper products.  Mardi Gras recipes are certainly encouraged.  A king and queen will be crowned and reign over the festivities.  Laissez les bon temps rouler!

There is a new Club Constitution which you can find on the web site, under documents, here: http://romerotaryny.org/documents.htm

President Bob would like to point out that you need to attend 60% of the meeting in order for it to count – hence, no signing in and leaving.

Program – Col. Fred Wieners, JROTC

Brand new Rotarian Col. Fred Wieners was the program and spoke of the JROTC program at RFA.  He first got the call to start this program 10 years ago by fellow Rotarian Herb Skogland and now, the program has been in place 6.5 years! Almost 10% of the student body takes part in JROTC and the graduation rates for cadets involved for four years is 95%.  Cadets do many hours of community service and spend much time learning character development and leadership.  Col. Wieners thanked Rotary for their ongoing and continued support of the program.  Thank you Col. Wieners for all you do!
