Rotary Information
Object
of Rotary — In some areas
of the world, weekly Rotary club meetings begin with all members standing and
reciting the Object of Rotary. This statement, which comes from the RI Constitution,
is frequently seen on a wall plaque in Rotarians’ offices or places of
business.
The Object of Rotary is “to encourage and foster the ideal of service as
a basis of worthy enterprise.” The statement then lists four areas by which
this “ideal of service is fostered: the development of acquaintance as an opportunity
for service; high ethical standards in business and professions, the
recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of
each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; the application
of the ideal of service in one’s personal, business, and community life; and
the advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a
world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of
service.
The Object of Rotary has not always been expressed in this manner. The
original constitution of 1906 had three objects: promotion of business
interests, promotion of good fellowship, and the advancement of the best
interests of the community. By 1910, Rotary had five objects as increased
emphasis was given to expanding Rotary. By 1915, there were six objects. In
1918, the objects were rewritten again and reduced to four. Four years later,
they had again grown to six and were revised again in 1927.
Finally, at the 1935 Mexico City Convention, the six objects were
restated and reduce to four. The last major change came in 1951 when the
objects were streamlined to a single object with four parts.

College “Collaboration”
Eight years ago a member of the MVCC
staff went to Vietnam on a Fulbright Scholarship. That experience was the start
of a close relationship between MVCC and Kien Giang Community College in the
southern area of Vietnam, near the Cambodian border and the Mekong Delta. It is
one of five institutions of higher learning in its small province. Today Khang
Nguyen, head of the English Department at the College joined Dean Ron Cantor of
Rome’s MVCC to address Rome Rotary.
Kien Giang Community College enrolls about 6,000 students of all ages and offers about 50 different majors, with strength in the English and IT curriculums. The goal of the college is to try to develop the intellectual level of the community. There is an emphasis on social work and service to the community. Vietnam has 54 ethnic minorities and the same number of language dialects, which can vary greatly.
Khang noted that the exchanges between the two educational institutions have expanded ideas and enhanced the educational programs offered at Kien Giang CC.
Thank you both for a very interesting program.
