Rotary Stuff

In 1985, Rotary launched PolioPlus, an ambitious program to immunize the world’s children against polio. Rotary’s grassroots leadership, volunteer support and initial funding for vaccines provided the catalyst for the World Health Assembly’s resolution in 1988 to eradicate polio worldwide. Spearheading partners of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative are the World Health Organization, Rotary International, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and UNICEF. As a result of these efforts, polio cases have dropped by 99% since 1988 and the world stands on the threshold of eradicating the disease. Rotary members have given more than half a billion U.S. dollars and countless hands-on volunteer hours toward this critical effort.

Program – Caring for the Aged at Home

Ron Cantor introduced the program which was a collaboration of many agencies and people.  He introduced  Frank Anderson, President of Senior Citizens Council of Rome along with Nancy Caputo, Assoc. Dean of Nursing at MVCC; Mike Romano, Director of Oneida County Office of the Aging; Linda Sears, Supervisor of Oneida County Caregiver Program, Elizabeth Stachow, Oneida County OFA Caregiver Program Coordinator,  Margaret Campani, Director, Ava Dorfman Senior Center and Donna Skibitski, Coordinator, MVCC Workforce Development.

Mike Romano spoke of the interrelations of all of these agencies ad the benefits of the Office of the Aging.  He said that it is estimated that 23 million people are caregivers for there family. What is a caregiver? It is anyone providing direct care in the home to prevent having to institutionalize patients. Mike also showed a film about caregivers.

Mike spoke about the importance of knowing what services are available. There was a great dialogue among Rotarians of this great collaboration of these agencies and of how the word can get out about these agencies and the work they do. Thank you everyone for a great program!
