Quote of the Week: "When you make a mistake, don't look back at it long. Take the reason of the thing into your mind, and then look forward. Mistakes are lessons of wisdom. The past cannot be changed. The future is yet in your power." — Phyllis Bottome, 1884-1963, Novelist and Lecturer.

Rotary Information

Sharing Rotary with New Members — Are your aware of the responsibility or obligation that most Rotarians fail to perform? It is paying their dues? Attending meetings? Contributing to the club’s service fund? Participating in club events and projects? No, none of these!

Of all the obligations a person accepts when joining a Rotary club, the one in which most Rotarians fail is sharing Rotary. Rotary International clearly supports the position that every individual Rotarian has an “obligation to share Rotary with others and to help extend Rotary by proposing qualified persons for Rotary club membership.” It is estimated that fewer than 30 percent of the members of most Rotary clubs have ever made the effort to propose a new member. Thus, in every club, there are many Rotarians who rarely share their positive experiences of Rotary membership with other individuals.

The RI Constitution states with respect to club membership: “Each club shall have a well-balanced membership in which no one business or profession predominates.” One merely has to glance through the pages of the local telephone or chamber of commerce directory to realize that most clubs have not invited qualified members of all business and professions into Rotary. One of the founding principles of Rotary is a fair and equitable representation of the professional and business population of the community it supports. To remain relevant Rotary clubs must include all professional and businesses within a community. Clubs can further expand the diversity of their membership by making sure that their membership also reflects the local business and professional community in terms of gender, age, and ethnic background.

Only a Rotarian may propose a customer, neighbor, client, supplier, executive, relative, business associate, professional, or other qualified person to join a Rotary club. Have you accepted your obligation to share Rotary? The procedures are very simple, and everyone must know at least one person who should belong to Rotary.

 [Rotary ABC’s, RI 2006, p. 13]

Editor’s Note: August is Membership and Extension Month. With the wonderful opportunities of sharing Rotary with our community through Canalfest (and all who worked did so), don’t forget to follow through with those who asked you about Rotary or showed an interest in our club.

Canalfest

Canalfest is now over and it was another spectacular event. The weather was not overly cooperative, but the crowds were still good and everyone had a good time at the event.

There were 75 Rotarians serving over the weekend who put in about 1,056 hours of service. This does not include the 1,000+ hours put in by other volunteers from the Interact Club, JROTC, Civil Air Patrol, and the numerous family members who gave us generous amounts of their time.

Canalfest Chair Jim Donovan shared a humorous story about all of the hoops he had to jump through to make the water events to be possible. It is almost unbelievable that all of the obstacles put in place by “the Great State of New York” were overcome. The Club owes a special debt of thanks to NY State Senator Joe Griffo who enabled us to get all of the necessary permits in the face of fierce opposition from the involved state departments.

Program

Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority

David Lupinski

Dave spoke to us today about the Authority and more specifically, about the land fill in Ava. This land fill only accepts waste from Oneida and Herkimer counties.

The land fill in Ava opened in October of 2006 after being selected from many potential sites. Over 1,000,000 yards of material were moved to construct it. There is a complex double layer liner to protect the ground water and adjacent environment. The land fill has an expected life expectancy of 62 years. The liquid that leaches out of the land fill is collected and then trucked to local treatment facilities. There is about 10 million gallons of such liquid each year.

“Thank you” Dave for the update and for all your hard work.
