Rotary Information

The District Conference — A district conference brings together all club member and their families — not just club officers and committee members — to enjoy fellowship and inspirational speakers and discuss matters that make one’s Rotary membership more meaningful. Every person who attends a district conference finds that being a Rotarian becomes even more rewarding because of the new experiences, insights, and acquaintances developed at the conference. Those who attend a conference enjoy going back year after year.

Every Rotary district has a conference annually. These meetings are considered so important that the RI president selects a knowledgeable Rotarian as a personal representative to attend and address each one. The program always includes several outstanding entertainment features, interesting discussions, and inspirational programs.

One of the added benefits of attending a district conference is the opportunity to become better acquainted with members of one’s own club in an informal setting. Lasting friendships grow from the fellowship hours at the district conference.

 [Rotary ABC’s, RI 2006, p. 22]

Don Burns from the DeWitt Club spoke to us today about the District Conference for our own 7150. It will be held in Albany at the Desmond Hotel on the weekend of 25–27 Sep. It will be a mixture of fellowship and business, and it is a family friendly conference with activities for all. Business forums will cover such topics as Polio Plus and membership. The GSE team will present a program. The RI representative from Alberta, Canada, will speak. There will be good food, tours of the area, golf, and a look at some of the ways Albany is celebrating the 400 years since Henry Hudson sailed up the river named after him and founded what became New York. Registration packets are available through the club or go to the web site for the event at: www.rotarydistrict7150.org/conference.htm.

Canalfest

·  Got Ducks??? Missy Graves is building a “Duck” boat for the “Ya Gotta Regatta” at Canalfest. She will be the lead boat in the parade at 5:00 PM on Saturday. Missy has asked if any Rotarians who have ducks that float, could please loan them to her to be towed behind the big “duck boat” on Saturday. So… get out your rubber duckies or any ducky thing that float and bring them to Missy.

·  Money for the sale of duck race tickets and unsold tickets are due in to Dave Kobernuss ASAP. Thank you for your all your efforts and thank your in advance for getting your money and tickets to Dave.

·  The sign-up sheet for Canalfest still has openings. Positions that still need to be filled include parking liaison, ride operators for the kiddie rides, people to help get the “Ya Gotta Regatta” into the water, and many other blank spots. Canalfest Preview — Jim Donovan

Jim Donovan gave us a preview of the Canalfest happening this coming weekend, focusing on the new events, such as the East Shore All Stars, a popular area band that will be playing.

There will be two water-ski shows on Saturday, one from 3–5 PM and the other 7–9 PM, and depending on how well those are received there is a possibility of two more shows on Sunday. This even was added to the venue only a week ago so it does not appear on any of the literature. The show features boys and girls age 7–18, who will be performing jumps, pyramids, ballet on skis, and “turn arounds.” There will be a preview demonstration on Friday night.

Between the water-ski shows there will be the “Ya Gotta Regatta,” the “anything but a boat race.” Entries must be in the boat parade at 5 PM, must be home made of nonboat parts, must be powered by human energy, and must be able to float. The trial run will eliminate the “sinkers” who will receive the “Titanic Award,” and those surviving will go on to compete on the course with the first boat over the line taking “The Regatta Cup.” There will be prizes for other categories such as the most team spirit and best decorated entries. Each entry will receive a medallion and a “goodie bag” of treasures.

There is a huge list of events and attractions, most back by popular demand from cooking contests, to flower shows, rides, new kiddie rides, food, bike safety events, kayak races, a car show, and fireworks displays all three nights, just to name a few.

If you have not made plans to help your Rome Rotary with this adventurous and fun undertaking, please see PP Dennis and sign up. Invite your friends, neighbors, and relatives. This has become the biggest summer event in Rome. Don’t miss it!

“Thank you” Jim for the update and for all your hard work.
