Quote of the Week: "I find the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving — we must sail sometimes with the wind and sometimes against it — but we must sail, and not drift, nor lie at anchor." — Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., 1841-1935, Former Justice to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Rotary Information

Group Study Exchange — One of the most popular and rewarding programs of The Rotary Foundation is Group Study Exchange. Since the first exchange between districts in California and Japan in 1965, the program has provided educational experiences for more than 52,000 business people and professionals who have served on about 12,000 teams. The GSE program pairs Rotary districts to send and receive study teams. Since 1965, more than US $88 million has been allocated by The Rotary Foundation for Group Study Exchange grants.

GSE provides an opportunity for the visiting team members to meet, talk, and live with Rotarians and their families in a warm spirit of friendship and hospitality. In addition to learning about another country through visits to farms, schools, industrial plants, professional offices, and governmental establishments, GSE team members serve as ambassadors of goodwill. They interpret their home nation for host Rotarians and others in the communities they visit. In recent years, teams of a single vocation or cultural group have been exchanged. Some GSE teams have helped to create humanitarian projects between their countries. Many of the personal contacts blossom into lasting friendships.

The Group Study Exchange program has provided Rotarians with a most enjoyable, practical, and meaningful way to promote world understanding.       [Rotary ABC’s, RI 2006, P. 37-38]

Rome Rotary will have the opportunity to participate in this unique cultural and vocational exchange when District 7150 “pairs” with District 2640 from Japan this year in exchanges, which will begin in September. Bob Bird will be our Club’s GSE coordinator.

Canalfest

·  Canalfest is our club’s biggest fund raiser, and the Duck Race is a major part of the event. Success depends on the participation of each member of the club. Let’s sell those tickets and help Rome Rotary to provide the quality programs that we have brought to the community in past years. Contact Dave Kobernuss with questions

·  PP Greg Mattacola is asking for help selling advertising to local businesses as a Canalfest fundraiser. These signs are posted on the Canalfest grounds for the weekend and are $50 each. The advertising is an “easy sell” since exposure is significant and the price much less than the cost of other media. Pick up forms at the meetings or see PP Greg to give your assistance.

·  Last week PP Dennis emailed a sign up sheet for Canalfest. A sign-up sheet is also circulating at the meetings. There are plenty of opportunities to give “Service Above Self.” Let’s fill up those spaces! Contact PP Dennis to let him know your preference.

·  The Honor America Day Parade is fast approaching on 25 July, the weekend before Canalfest. About twenty-five Rotarians are needed to carry the large American Flag & our banner and to hand out Canalfest brochures. This is a chance to share Rotary with family. Bring them along. Watch for the sign-up sheet and see Dan Faldzinski with your questions.

·  The Syracuse Symphony Concert and fireworks display at Fort Stanwix, part of the Honor America Days celebrations, will take place on the evening of 25 July. We have permission to hand out Canalfest flyers at the concert, and Rotarians are needed to make this happen. See PP Dennis.

·  Canalfest posters are available for display in the community. Put them up in your own businesses or ask business owners in Rome and surrounding communities to display them. Posters are available at the meetings or contact Kay DeSimone or PP Dennis.

·  Canalfest now has a place on the web. Check it out! It is part of www.RomeRotaryNY.org or go directly to the site at www.RomeRotaryNY.org/canal.

Announcements and Events

·  Juan Carlos Rincon Moreno, our newest RI Youth Exchange student, will arrive in Rome in August from Venezuela. Host parents are needed to provide a home and family for Juan for several three to four months periods. Please contact Chris or Nancy Neiley, nneiley@aol.com, or 827-4303.

Welcome to New Member Rev. Sam Pendergrast

Rome Rotary extended a warm welcome today to newest member Rev. Sam Pendergrast. Sam describes himself as a true southerner, born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He met his wife Cynthia, who is from Iowa, in Texas, and later they were married in Knoxville, TN. He attended Furman College in Greenville, NC for his undergraduate work, and later the Presbyterian Seminary in Knoxville, TN. His first church was in Storm Lake, Iowa. He spent a number of years serving a church in Lexington, KY, has done hospital ministry, and has served as an interim pastor. He became the pastor at Rome’s First Presbyterian Church about eight months ago. He and Cynthia have two sons, Allan who is in graduate school at RPI, and James who is studying at the University of Rochester.

TO SAM: “Please believe that ‘It is the truth’ that our winters are not usually as snowy as this last one, and our Julys are usually a lot warmer. We are glad to have you here, and we welcome you to Rome Rotary!
