Rotary Information

More Rotary Firsts

Rotary became bilingual in 1916 when the first club was organized in a non-English-speaking country--Havana, Cuba.

Rotary established the "Endowment Fund" in 1917, which became the forerunner of The Rotary Foundation.

Rotary first adopted the name "Rotary International" in 1922 when the name was changed from the International Association of Rotary Clubs.

Rotary first established the Paul Harris Fellows recognition in 1957 for contributors of $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary club which first held meetings on a weekly basis was Oakland, California, the Number 3 club.

The Rotary emblem was printed on a commemorative stamp for the first time in 1931 at the time of the Vienna Convention.

The first Rotary club banner (from the Houston Space Center) to orbit the moon was carried by astronaut Frank Borman, a member of that club.

The first Rotary International convention held outside the United States was in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1921.

The first head of state to address a Rotary convention was U.S. President Warren G. Harding in 1923 at St. Louis.

Announcements and Events

·  Good news! Rome Rotary will once again host a Youth exchange student in 2009-10. Juan will be arriving from Venezuela in August. Host parents are needed to welcome Juan into their homes for three to four months. This is a wonderful opportunity to personally participate in international friendship and understanding, as those who have done so in the past will attest. The program is available to Rotarians and non-Rotarians. If you or someone you know may be interested in hosting Juan, please contact Chris or Nancy Neiley, nneiley@aol.com, 827-4303.

·  Mark your calendars for the Rome Rotary Summer Picnic that will be held at Sylvan Beach on Sunday, 28 Jun. Party barges will cruise up Fish Creek. Details later.

·  District 7150 Changing of the Guard Dinner will be held at Dibbles Inn on 30 Jun — $30 per person before 13 Jun or $35 after that date. See PE Bob Herrmann or Secretary Dennis for more information.

·  Dues for 2009–10 are due by 1 Jul. Members paying dues on or before 16 Jun receive a discount ($180 versus $200!). The RRC will match the first $100 of any new Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member. (See Dennis for dues. See Bill Tuthill for information on The Rotary Foundation.)

Program

Roses for the Living

This program was a wonderful evening of praise and celebration for some of Rome’s community benefactors. Brothers Tom and Howard Sears and their sister Barbara Sears DeHimer were all present to receive the 2009 Rome Rotary Club Roses for the Living Award. The Sears Family, both directly and through their family foundation, has made a very real difference in the lives of the people of the Rome area.

Roses Chair Darlene Burns served as the MC for the dinner and Rotary President Ron Townsend opened and closed the event as we do our normal meetings.

Darlene Burns                                 Ron Townsend

The two prime examples (of too many to recount) were their leadership donation to the recently completed Rome Memorial Hospital Emergency Department and the yearly donations in support of the Rome Rotary Club Christmas Party for needy children. When Rome has a need, the Sears Family has made themselves part of the solution. Several organizations such as the Jervis Library, American Red Cross, and the Rotary Club all had speakers extolling the contributions of this year’s winners of the Roses for the Living Award

Congratulations and best wishes for these outstanding community volunteers and contributors.
