Rotary Information

Youth Exchange — Rotary Youth Exchange is one of the most popular programs to promote international understanding and develop lifelong friendships. Beginning in 1927 with the Rotary Club of Nice, France, exchanges in Europe continued until World War II and resumed in 1946. In 1939, an extensive Youth Exchange was created between California, USA, and Latin America. Since then, the program has expanded around the world. In recent years, more than 7,000 young people have participated annually in Rotary club and district sponsored exchange programs.

The values of Youth Exchange are experienced not only by the high-school-age students involved but also by the host families, sponsor clubs, receiving high schools, and the entire community. Youth Exchange participants usually provide their fellow students in their host schools with excellent opportunities to learn about customs, languages, traditions, and family life in another country.

Youth Exchange offers young people interesting opportunities and rich experiences to see another part of the world. Students spend a full academic year abroad through the long-term exchange program. A growing number of clubs and districts are sponsoring short-term exchanges of several weeks or months.

A structured program of RI since 1974, Youth Exchange is a highly recommended activity for all Rotary clubs to enhance international understanding and goodwill.

Announcements and Events

·  Good news! Rome Rotary will once again host a Youth exchange student in 2009-10. Juan will be arriving from Venezuela in August. Host parents are needed to welcome Juan into their homes for three to four months. This is a wonderful opportunity to personally participate in international friendship and understanding, as those who have done so in the past will attest. The program is available to Rotarians and non-Rotarians. If you or someone you know may be interested in hosting Juan, please contact Chris or Nancy Neiley, nneiley@aol.com, 827-4303.

·  Mark your calendars for the Rome Rotary Summer Picnic that will be held at Sylvan Beach on Sunday, 28 Jun. Party barges will cruise up Fish Creek. Details later.

·  District 7150 Changing of the Guard Dinner will be held at Dibbles Inn on 30 Jun — $30 per person before 13 Jun or $35 after that date. See PE Bob Herrmann or Secretary Dennis for more information.

·  This year’s Roses for the Living Award will honor the Sears family of Rome at a dinner held at the Beeches on Tuesday 9 Jun. Cost is $25 per person. Social hour at 5:30. Dinner at 6:30. The Sears family has made significant contributions to this community over many years. Come and help us honor them. For tickets, see PE Bob Herrmann. Tickets will NOT be sold at the door.

·  Dues for 2009–10 are due by 1 Jul. Members paying dues on or before 16 Jun receive a discount ($180 versus $200!). The RRC will match the first $100 of any new Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member. (See Dennis for dues. See Bill Tuthill for information on The Rotary Foundation.)

Program

Rotary Student Scholarship

Today’s program is always a favorite. Rome Rotary recognized excellence in five youth selected from our community. Each of these students demonstrated personal commitment to academics, community, and school. They have served in their respective churches, are members of the National Honor Society, belonged to JROTC and SADD, have contributed to the arts, including music, drama, and media, participated in sports, volunteered for charitable organizations and events, and taken responsibility in student government, and more. In many instances they were not only involved, but they also held leadership roles in their chosen organizations and events. Each youth submitted an essay explaining why their life goals address the Rotary Motto “Service Above Self.”

The five youth honored today were: 1) Fallon Gannon, attending either Butler University in Indianapolis or University of the Arts in Philadelphia majoring in the Arts, with interests in dance, photography, journalism, and multimedia; 2) Samantha Gleba, attending Mohawk Valley Community College majoring in Mathematics and minoring in Spanish with interest in teaching high school mathematics and language communication; 3) Nickolas Mellace, attending Stony Brook University majoring in Chemistry with a particular interest in cancer cure research; 4) Peter Anthony Monahan attending SUNY Geneseo majoring in Physics with an interest in an eventual masters in Nuclear Engineering; and Ariana Smith attending Utica College majoring in Economic Crime Investigation with an interest in promoting the qualities of good citizenship in our youth.

These students were congratulated by Superintendent of Rome Schools, Rotarian Jeff Simons, who commended the parents, family, and friends present for their support in the lives of these young citizens. Each youth received a check for $1000 from Rome Rotary. Congratulations and best wishes for “making your dreams a reality.”
