Quote of the Week: "Remembering that God does not measure time by man's calendar, that he is not in a hurry, we'll abide his time with assurance that eventually right will prevail. We'll plant acorns of love and watch the slow-growing oaks until time shall prove again that the law of the harvest is inexorable.” — Hugh B. Brown.

Rotary Information

Rotary Mottoes — The first motto of Rotary International, He Profits Most Who Serves Best, was approved at the second Rotary Convention, held in Portland, Oregon, USA, in 1911. The phrase came from a 1910 speech by a Chicago Rotarian, Art Sheldon, who said, “He profits most who serves his fellows best.” At about the same time, Ben Collins, president of the Rotary Club of Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, commented that the proper way to organize a Rotary club was through the principle his club had adopted: Service Not Self. These two slogans, slightly modified, were formally approved as the official mottoes of Rotary at the 1950 convention in Detroit: He Profits Most Who Serves Best and Service Above Self. The 1989 Council on Legislation established Service Above Self as the principle motto of Rotary, since it best explains the philosophy of unselfish volunteer service. In 2004, the secondary motto was changed to They Profit Most Who Serve Best.

Rotary Contribution to the Salvation Army

Today our Club made a $500 donation to the Rome Salvation Army. Accepting for the Salvation Army was Major Bernard (“Bernie”) Bone, the interim Commander of the Rome SA. These funds were part of the proceeds from last year’s Canalfest.

Community Events

Our community offers many worthwhile events. This week check out the Lullabies of Broadway, an Italian Buffet at the Savoy to benefit Cancer’s Relay for Life, and a Father’s Day Fly-in Pancake Breakfast. Flyers for these events are attached at the end of this newsletter. We invite you to take advantage of these fine programs. Enjoy!!!

Program

Memorial Meeting, President Ron Townsend

President Ron started this meeting by recognizing all veterans of the armed forces who were present today. He asked all of them to stand and identify their service and what they each did while serving the Country.

Ron then gave a moving tribute to Iris Barnes who passed away during this past Rotary year. Iris was a great community volunteer, loyal & active veteran of the Navy, and a long-time Rome Rotarian. She was a great Rotarian and is missed by all who knew her.
