Rotary Information
The District Conference — A district conference brings together all
club member and their families — not just club officers and committee members —
to enjoy fellowship and inspirational speakers and discuss matters that make
one’s Rotary membership more meaningful. Every person who attends a district
conference finds that being a Rotarian becomes even more rewarding because of
the new experiences, insights, and acquaintances developed at the conference.
Those who attend a conference enjoy going back year after year.
Every Rotary district has a conference
annually. These meetings are considered so important that the RI president
selects a knowledgeable Rotarian as a personal representative to attend and
address each one. The program always includes several outstanding entertainment
features, interesting discussions, and inspirational programs.
One of the added benefits of attending a
district conference is the opportunity to become better acquainted with members
of one’s own club in an informal setting. Lasting friendships grow from the
fellowship hours at the district conference.

Program
DGE Fred Cholet
District 7150 Governor Elect Fred Cholet joined us today to speak about issues before the district and plans for the coming year.
Fred grew up on Nottingham Road in Syracuse and at various times in his life has been a foundry worker, served in Vietnam and in the National Guard, drove a liquor delivery truck, and was a captain in the Syracuse Fire Department. He also served as Chief of the Dewitt Volunteer Fire Department, a career he describes as “like Rotary, people taking care of people.”
Fred is looking forward to the coming year, and expressed his gratitude to Rome Rotarians Mike Occhipinti, who will continue to serve as District Chair for Polio Plus, Dennis Schonewetter who is writing the Credo, and RRC President Ron, who will serve as Membership Chair. “It is about good team leadership. … The important thing is all working together.” He brought applause when he stated, “the greatest thing that happened to Rotary was bringing women into the organization."
On the international level, he mentioned that RI President Elect John Kenny will be keeping the same focus, that of health, relief of hunger, and the provision of clean water to the people of this earth. He believes that once the Polio Plus campaign is completed, clean water will become an even greater focus. Of the four remaining countries in which polio has not been eradicated, great progress has been made in India, Nigeria is “so-so”, but Afghanistan and Pakistan remain problems because of limited access in these war torn areas.
Fred announced the District Conference for 2009–10, [See details in the Rotary information section above.], and the Rotary theme for next year, which is “The future of Rotary is in your hands.”
“Thank you” Fred for joining us. We look forward to welcoming you as DG at the Changing of the Guard in June.

Steven E. Winberg Vice
President, CONSOL Energy, Inc. Research
& Development Coal Conversion & Power |

|
Steven E. Winberg has had 30 years
experience in the energy industry, ranging from power generation equipment and
installation, to use of innovative fuels. Steven represented the gas industry
on EPA’s Acid Rain Advisory Committee and participated in various rulemaking
initiatives involving end-use of natural gas. He also holds two patents related
to NOx emissions reduction using coal and natural gas.
The US Government is making critical
decisions on energy and the environment that will effect how we live, what we
pay, and perhaps most importantly, how our children will live and what they
will pay.
This lecture will begin with some basics on
greenhouse emissions and their impact on global climate change. Steve will
discuss the growing global energy consumption and the impact that it has on the
environment, the US economy and our energy security.
What can the US do to find the “sweet
spot” between the conflicting interests of energy, the environment, and our
economy? Are these indeed conflicting interests?
Attend this lively discussion on energy,
the environment, and the impact on our economy and us. This is an opportunity
to focus on these important issues, to learn and to exchange ideas.
