your very nature, will be determined by your thoughts, of which your acts are but
the outward expression. Thought is the seed of action." — David O. McKay.
Rotary Information
The
District Assembly — In
view of the annual turnover of Rotary leadership each year, special effort is
required to provide the more than 32,000 club leaders with appropriate instruction
for the tasks they will assume. The annual district assembly is the primary
training event for incoming club officers.
The district
assembly offers motivation, inspiration, Rotary information, and new ideas for
club officers, directors, and committee chairs. Experienced district leaders
conduct informative discussions on all phases of Rotary administration and
service projects. The assembly gives participants valuable new ideas to make
their club more effective and interesting. Usually, 8 to 10 delegates from each
club are invited to attend the training session, which is held in April or May.
The district
assembly also offers the incoming district governor a chance to introduce the
RI theme and presidential emphases for the coming year. District goals and
objectives are also described, and plans are developed for their
implementation.
Participation
in the annual district assembly greatly contributes to the success of each
Rotary club during the following year.

Jeff Simons, Superintendent
|
|
In
what has become an annual spring program for Rome Rotary, Rotarian and Rome
Superintendent of Schools Jeff Simons presented the proposal for the 2009–10
Rome City School District budget.
This comprehensive material from the Preliminary
Budget Hearing of 8 Apr as presented by Jeff cannot be adequately addressed in
such a small space. The points that he repeated and wished us to remember and
take home were three. With this budget all academic programs are preserved.
There has been an increase in spending of only 0.7%, accomplished by trimming
“fat” and cutting expenses, this despite significant cutbacks in anticipated
state aid. And finally, the tax increase proposed is a “modest” 1–1.5%. It
would be well worth the effort of any conscientious citizen to obtain a copy of
the report and become familiar with the content. Jeff’s last directive to all
was, “Get Out and Vote on 19 May!”
“Thank you” Jeff for taking the time out of your busy
schedule to present this material to Rotary.

Steven
E. Winberg Vice
President, CONSOL Energy, Inc. Research
& Development Coal Conversion & Power |
|
|
Steven E. Winberg has had 30 years experience in the
energy industry, ranging from power generation equipment and installation, to
use of innovative fuels. Steven represented the gas industry on EPA’s Acid Rain
Advisory Committee and participated in various rulemaking initiatives involving
end-use of natural gas. He also holds two patents related to NOx emissions
reduction using coal and natural gas.
The US Government is making critical decisions on energy
and the environment that will effect how we live, what we pay, and perhaps most
importantly, how our children will live and what they will pay.
This lecture will begin with some basics on greenhouse
emissions and their impact on global climate change. Steve will discuss the
growing global energy consumption and the impact that it has on the
environment, the US economy and our energy security.
What can the US do to find the “sweet spot” between
the conflicting interests of energy, the environment, and our economy? Are
these indeed conflicting interests?
Attend this lively discussion on energy, the
environment, and the impact on our economy and us. This is an opportunity to
focus on these important issues, to learn and to exchange ideas.
