EDITORS’ NOTE: In Rome Rotary we have one of the finest civic organizations in our community and one of the friendliest. Even the finest have room for improvement. It has come to our attention, from both our own membership and those who have visited with us, that we are no exception. Once a speaker comes to the podium, giving your attention and refraining from private conversations is courteous and respectful, not only to the presenter, but also to fellow Rotarians who would like to enjoy the program. With a little effort we can all help to make our fine organization even better for all. — Cindy Roubian and PP Dennis Schonewetter, Editors.

Rotary Information

Evans (C)Rotary’s Birthplace — The number 711 has a very special significance for Rotary. Room 711 of the old Unity Building, formerly located at 127 North Dearborn Street in downtown Chicago, was the birthplace of Rotary. It was in that historic room, which was the office of engineer Gus Loehr, where Paul Harris first met with several friends to discuss his new idea of a club for professionals and businessmen.

After extensive research, a few Chicago Rotarians restored the room to its 1905 authenticity. For years, Room 711 was preserved as a miniature Rotary museum by members of the Paul Harris 711 Club, which provided funds for leasing, maintenance, and preservation. In 1989, when the Unity Building was about to be torn down, 711 Club members carefully dismantled the landmark room and placed its contents in storage. There it stayed until 1994, when Room 711 was recreated and located at RI World Headquarters in Evanston, where this piece of Rotary’s heritage is preserved permanently.

Rotary Announcements

·  Carey (C)Next month, 5 May is “Bring a Friend to Rotary Day.” Perhaps you have noticed the articles in the Daily Sentinel, encouraging members of the community to investigate Rotary membership. We have also refined and improved our “Why Join Rome Rotary” brochure. Every Rotarian can give them to friends and neighbors. Valerie Carey is doing a great job as Membership Chair. Let’s support her efforts.

·  Till (C)Carla Till extends her “thanks” to those who have contributed some wonderful children’s books for the African book project. More are needed. Books should be in new or good used condition and for children through grade six. Textbooks are accepted. Books may be brought to Rotary or contact Carla for further information.

·  Adamo (C)Rotary will have a booth again this year for the Rome Home Show on 25–26 April. Members are asked to give an hour of time Saturday or Sunday to help sell duck tickets for Canalfest. Program

Syracuse Symphony — Daniel Hege, Conductor

If you missed today’s program, you missed a very special treat. Daniel Hege has been the conductor of the Syracuse Symphony, which is the largest artistic organization in Syracuse, for over ten years. He learned to love music as a child and was exposed to classical music at a very young age, knowing then that it would play a part in his life. Ultimately it became his career.

The Syracuse Symphony is a career to all who perform in the orchestra. The schedule of rehearsals and performances is demanding. Every musician must know the music before sitting down at one of the 110 rehearsals a year. There are 120 performances per season, with 45–50 of those off-site in Rome, Watertown, and Cortland. Weekly performances in Syracuse include classical concerts, educational performances in schools and churches, and family programs. Daniel estimates that the symphony orchestra reaches 30,000 children a year.

Daniel shared the beginning page of Beethoven’s Eroica with us. The piece will be performed at Rome Free Academy on 25 Apr, during the last concert in this year’s Rome Series. He gave some history of the piece, explained the components of a score, talked about how a score is studied, and pointed out some of the characteristics of this particular music that are unusual. His program was filled with interesting details about music history, characteristics of the different composers, and the work and goals of a symphony conductor.

Daniel’s purpose in speaking to groups like ours is to increase understanding and appreciation for classical music and to show the average listener that these pieces can and should be enjoyed, regardless of a person’s background or musical expertise. He feels strongly that all listeners can allow the music to “wash” over them and enjoy it, feel it, and experience it individually. He noted that “language has boundaries that music does not have.” This characteristic opens the appreciation of fine music to everyone. “Classical music is timeless. It has something to say to us.”

The Rome series for the 2009–2010 season at RFA will include The Emperor Concerto (10/8), Holiday Pops (12/21), Big, Bold, and Brassy” American Jazz Classics (1/14); and The Magical Music of Disney in Concert (5/6). More information for all concerts is available by going online to www.SyracuseSymphony.org.

“Thank you” Daniel for an absolutely wonderful program.
