Rotary Information

The Rotarian and the Rotary World Magazine Press — The month of April is designated as Rotary’s Magazine Month, an occasion to recognize and promote the reading and use of the official RI magazine, The Rotarian, and the Rotary Regional magazines, which make up the Rotary World Magazine Press.

The Rotarian has been around since 1911 as the medium to communicate with Rotarians and advance the program and Object of Rotary. A Primary goal of the magazine is to support and promote key programs of Rotary. The magazine also disseminates information about the annual RI theme and the philosophy of the RI president, major meetings, and the emphasis of the officially designated months on the Rotary calendar.

The Rotarian provides a forum in which both Rotary-related and general interest topics may be explored. The magazine serves as an excellent source of information and ideas for programs at Rotary club meetings and district conferences. Many articles promote international fellowship, goodwill, and understanding. Regular readers usually have superior knowledge of the activities of Rotary and understand how each Rotarian may be more fully involved in the four Avenues of Service around the world.

In addition to The Rotarian, the Rotary World Magazine Press includes 30 regional magazines printed in 23 languages with a combined circulation of more than 750,000. Although each regional publication has its own unique style and content, all provide Rotarians with up-to-date information and good reading in April — and all through the year.

Rome Rotary and Literacy

·  Dave Nolan is the President of the Board at Jervis Library and reports that after years of no increases, the library budget has been cut, and the available funds to purchase books is down 50%, despite an increase library usage of 7% a year. Dave is asking Rotarians to sign a petition to put an increase on the library tax, to be voted on in May. The average household would see an increase of about $15 a year. See Dave or watch for the petitions.

·  Carla Till continues to collect children’s books to be sent to Africa. Books should be in new or good used condition and preferably for the elementary age level. Textbooks are accepted. Books may be brought to Rotary or contact Carla for further information.

·  Dee Mammolito has sent over 350 books to Marcy for the new Wellness Library at the prison. There has been great excitement over these titles. She will gladly accept additional books, preferably self help or motivational.

·  MVCC recycles books each spring. As you do your spring cleaning, this is another outlet for those titles that you may no longer find useful and those that may not fit into the two above categories. See Barbara Evans.

·  And lastly… look for the article and picture in the Sunday Sentinel on the Rotary Readers.

Thank you!

A Rotary “thank you” to Rosellen Mattson for the generous check of $500 she donated to Canalfest on behalf of the Rosellen Mattson Insurance Agency.

Program

American Red Cross, Lisa Kramer-Lape

Lisa Kramer-Lape is the account representative for the American Red Cross for Apheresis.

A term unfamiliar to most of us, apheresis means “taking away” and refers to a part the blood donor program. An apheresis donation takes only part of the blood, and donors experience fewer side effects.

Lisa spoke specifically about platelets and plasma donation. The blood is taken from one arm and centrifuged under sterile conditions to extract the blood products needed, and the remaining blood components are returned to the donor via the other arm. This method reduces waste by returning the red cells, which are the byproducts of plasma or platelet extraction, to the donor. Because it takes less time for a donor to recover, it decreases the length of time between donations. The process is maximized.

Lisa spoke about the various situations where the different types of blood products might be used, platelets for surgeries or cancer patients, and plasma for burn or trauma patients, for example. She reviewed the various blood types. Those in demand for whole blood donation differ from those types needed or preferred for plasma or platelet donation.

There is an apheresis center in New Hartford. For more information on becoming a donor or to schedule an appointment, call 1-800-545-4086 or email an inquiry to apheresisdonor@usa.redcross,org. For information online go to www.donatebloodnow.org/apheresis.

“Thank you” Lisa for visiting Rome Rotary and sharing this important part of the work of the Red Cross.
