Rotary News
World Understanding Month — February is designated World Understanding
Month on the Rotary calendar. The month also includes the anniversary of the
first meeting of Rotary, held on 23 February 1905, now designated World Understanding
and Peace Day.
The RI Board asks all Rotary clubs to
observe World Understanding Month by planning programs for their weekly
meetings and undertaking special activities to emphasize “understanding and
goodwill as essential for world peace.”
In February, many clubs arrange for
international speakers, invite Youth Exchange students and international
scholars from schools and universities to club meetings, plan programs featuring
former Group Study Exchange team members, arrange discussions on global issues,
present entertainment with an international cultural or artistic theme, or plan
other programs with an international emphasis.
Many clubs take the opportunity to launch an
international service activity or make contact with a Rotary club in another
country. February is also a good time to initiate a Rotary Friendship Exchange
or encourage support for Rotary Foundation programs.
World Understanding Month is a chance for
every club to promote Rotary’s continued quest for goodwill, peace, and understanding
among people of the world.

Announcements
· PP Greg Mattacola is looking for six or seven Rotarians to help with the “Legends of the Diamonds Dinner” held each spring at the Beeches in conjunction with the Lion’s and Kiwanis Clubs. This is a fundraising event with the proceeds split three ways. It is a unique and very nice evening. A famous baseball player from the past is the keynote speaker, and there are lots of extras and perks for those who attend. Rome Rotary’s participation over the last couple years has weakened. In order to continue with this event, we need to step to the plate (no pun intended) and do our share. If we do not have at least six to seven members interested in serving on the committee, the club will stop participating. Please contact PP Greg.
· Rotary Leadership Institute will be offered this spring on 4 Apr at BOCES. The content of this program is useful for life in general and is not limited to those who aspire to leadership roles in Rotary. Those who have attended report that it is well worth your effort. Club pays tuition. See PP Dennis or President Ron.
· The Rome Academy of Sciences will hold their annual Science Fair at RFA on 7 March. Judges are needed. You need not be a scientist, and instruction is given on what to expect. Lunch is provided. Contact Harry Winberg at 339-2175, Keith Butters at 336-5437, or Dave Kobernuss at 336-2808.
Polio Program Dinner

Speaker Jeff
Urbin, PHF Recipient Bruce Fraser, DG Larry, PDG Mike, and President Ron
Last Friday Rome Rotary hosted a dinner for the Polio Plus Program with Jeff Urban from the FDR Library as the keynote speaker. Many from the District, including DG Larry Calabrese attended, as well as a number of members from Rome Rotary. Today PDG Mike Occhipinti, District Polio Plus Chair, thanked the committee again for their assistance. President Ron has information and brochures for those who may have missed the event and would like to see them. Bruce Fraser, an honoree at the event, sent a check for $25 to be donated to the Polio Plus program. It was a wonderful evening, one we hope to repeat next year.
Canalfest Proceeds Contributions
Dave Kobernuss thought it would be a good idea to publish the list of Board-approved contributions that have been and will be made with the proceeds from Canalfest ’08. The total proceeds of the event were $20,984. This is the Club’s largest fundraiser and is a tribute to the hard work of all of the participating members of the Rome Rotary Club.

Program
Tony Darcangelo,
Rome 6th Ward Councilor
Tony represents the sixth ward of Rome, which covers a large area of Rome including places as far apart as the Deaf School and Pennystreet Road.
Tony began his talk expressing thanks to Rome Rotary, as the “real servants.” He specifically mentioned Rome Rotary Canalfest and commented on how this service to the community is growing and prospering and has benefited Rome.
He discussed three issues affecting our community. The first is water & sewer. “Economic development will follow water and sewer lines.” He is working to expand these services. The second issue is “air space” and the associated noise. Our community is close to the airport, and we depend on the associated commercial enterprises for our economy. “The air space needs to be protected. That is our business.” The third issue he chose to discuss was snowmobiles, and the goal to co-exist with them. He noted that these recreational sports enthusiasts come from all over the northeast and beyond to use our excellent trails, and they spend lots of money in our community on goods and services. He mentioned that most are also good stewards of the land. He believes it is our economic interest to work out areas of difference.
He finished by again praising Rome Rotary and individual Rotarians for the way we make a difference. “Thank you” Tony for joining us today and keeping us informed on the issues affecting our community.
